    Rav Kook in a Click
    Shmuel Edelman, Besheva, 22/02/07

Rabbi Dov Goldstein is currently marketing a database program of the writings of Rabbi Kook and his disciples, version 3. The database contains the fruit of labor of nearly a century of Rav Kook's writings....

Anyone looking to find a specific text in the writings of Rav Kook can find it out of all the books selected, by title or author. But the great advantage of the database is its search software that allows one query any phrase or word in Rav Kook's writings. If you wanted, for example, to quote Rav Kook's words on natural morality, but don't remember exactly where the quote appears, or if you wanted to see what Rabbi Kook said about the month of Adar, you can easily find all the places this expression appears.

In addition, the Babylonian Talmud and Bible are on the CD-ROM, and can be reached with a single click from any source or footnote. Those for whom Rav Kook's language is difficult can use the dictionary concepts of Rabbi Joseph Kelner. And those who are accustomed to adding personal notes in pencil can do so also on the computerized version. Another brilliant stroke is the recording of page numbers of the texts as they appear in the original books. Pictures that appear in a book open with the specified link text and can be used for any work or an exhibition. The software is compatible with Windows XP.

The database is quite friendly and easy to use. You can copy and edit sections, print or save. The design is made in good taste.

Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook (1865-1935), the celebrated first Chief Rabbi of pre-state Israel, is recognized as being among the most important Jewish thinkers of all times. His writings reflect the mystic's search for underlying unity in all aspects of life and the world, and his unique personality similarly united a rare combination of talents and gifts.

Rav Kook was a prominent rabbinical authority and active public leader, but at the same time, a deeply religious mystic. He was both Talmudic scholar and poet, original thinker and saintly tzaddik.
